Two Divers in A Lotus Lake

From Lotus Pond Diver series. The series was inspired by a dream which feels very much like a response to the current collective awakening of women (and men). A lotus, or water lily, traditionally symbolizes compassion, and the woman surging up from the mysterious darkness of the pond speaks to the source of that compassion. The style of the painting nods a bit toward the Japanese woodblock prints in the areas of lotus flowers and leaves whereas the woman’s figure is inspired by black and white photographs of Japanese pearl divers. These divers, or Amas (literally meaning women of the sea) have long been a source of mystery and inspiration for me due to their grace, strength and joy. This piece is important to me personally, an essential part of my path as an artist and a woman, as a representation of feminine wisdom and strength.
