Lilies and Blackberries

Two years ago I moved to New York City with my family so our young son could study piano at a conservatory here. Up until that time we lived in the spacious mountain valley in Colorado and a small mountain town in northern New Mexico. We had shopped local farms for our food and flowers and spent much time enjoying and observing the truly great outdoors. After we moved to the city, its parks and corner flower shops provided an entirely different subject for observation. I started to collect plants and flowers to paint and a new series of large scale still loses was born. The large scale format of the original is a bit unusual for me - ordinarily I create smaller still lifes. In the case of this series I chose the large scale format (most pieces are at least 52” X 30”) to underscore the bold, bright spirit of the pieces - an antidote for the NY winter, or the gloomy political situation, darkness that so much of humanity endures near and far from us. It also allowed me observe and present in sometimes larger than life representations the intricate plants, flowers and objects. The upward movement of many of the smaller flowers and wild fruit branches is intentional, encouraging lightness of spirit and the joy of the awakening of spring.
